Fernando’s death upsets Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka
Colombo, Oct 9 : Sri Lankan trade union has demanded that their government and India should take the responsibility for killing of their leading representative in India.

Warnakulasuriyage Canisius Fernando was shot dead on Friday inside Madurai jail in Tamil Nadu.

Fernando had gone to meet three Sri Lankan fishermen, who were being held for unauthorised entry into Indian waters.

In a statement issued on Monday, the All Ceylon Fisher Peoples' Trade Union (ACFPTU) said that both the Indian and Sri Lankan governments should take responsibility over Fernando's killing, reported the BBC.

They have also urged Sri Lankan and Indian governments to investigate the killing. They say only a judicial probe by both countries would clarify the circumstances of Fernando’s death.

Indian officials say the guard, who shot Fernando, has been suspended and the matter is being investigated.

The union also urged Sri Lankan government to pay compensation to Fernando’s family. (ANI)
