Female Viagra Addyi approved by US FDA with strict warnings
The FDA has approved a pill for women suffering from sexual dysfunction in the United States. The drug known as Addyi will be prescribed to women with the condition, acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), and also to those who have faced sudden or severe loss of libido.
It is a non-hormonal drug, which will target neurotransmitters in the brain to boost the libido of women. The drug is meant to be taken one time on daily basis before going to sleep. As per health experts, the condition, HSDD, is a persistent lack of interest in sex. It can develop in women who were earlier sexually active.
Janet Woodcock, Director of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said that the drug will act as an approved treatment option for women that are distressed by their low sexual desire.
It shall however, be noted that the drug is only meant for women who are not in their menopause phase. The drug will only be available by certified health care professionals and certified pharmacies so that there is no misuse of it.
Sprout Pharmaceuticals based in North Carolina has manufactured the drug, which is also known as flibanserin. There is a caution that the pill should not be taken with alcohol, as it can cause side effects.
