Federer completes perfect Open preparation with tune-up title

Federer completes perfect Open preparation with tune-up titleMelbourne - Roger Federer dominated good friend Stan Wawrinka 6-1, 6-3, taking just 57 minutes on Saturday to secure his second title in five years at the AAMI Classic.

"I've played plenty of matches going into the Open, the health is not an issue," said the winner. "I'm fresh and fit and ready to go. Things are the way I was hoping them to be."

The Swiss world number two, bidding for his fourth trophy at the Australian Open, said that he couldn't have asked for a better week of preparation as he attempts to win a record-equalling 14th Grand Slam title at the Open which starts Monday.

"I played a really great match today, but I don't want to get too excited. This was my best match of the week. I'm very excited that I played well in the wind and the heat here."

Federer now stands 3-0 against the man with whom he won the Beijing Olympic doubles gold medal five months ago.

"It was nice to play a good friend of mine," said Federer. "We had an incredible time in winning the gold medal in Beijing. I don't get to play against Stan very often.

"I wish we could have played closer, but tennis happens in a way that if you get the lead you find momentum. I started to play really well, and for him it was the opposite.

"I mixed it up and never gave him a lot of rhythm. You can't show any mercy, you just try to play a good match. If it's 6-1, 6-1 that what it is."

Federer swept the first set, taking a 4-0 lead and ending with his third break after 26 minutes.

Wawrinka put up more of a fight in the second after going down an early break, saving a break point in the sixth game for 2-4.

But the impressive Federer momentum prevailed, with the favourite crushing an overhead winner on his second match point to claim the victory.

"This kind of a week gives you an idea of where your game is at," said Federer, who plans a light day on Sunday prior at Melbourne Park.

"Practise matches are one thing, but here you have the fans, the linesman, the ballboys and the pressure maybe of being on television."

Wawrinka held his head high in defeat.

"I'm very happy with my game for the week," said Wawrinka. "This was good preparation for the Open. Conditions were windy but not too bad. It's always tough against Roger. He played good, enough to beat me." (dpa)
