FDA To Inquire US Made Lipsticks High In Lead
Beijing: According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ report, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration would examine if some brands of US-made red lipsticks contain high lead levels.
The examinations were carried on 33 lipstick brands in four different cities, out of which 22 were positive for lead. However, the Food and Drug Administration set no standards for lead safety in cosmetics.
The organization said that a few lipstick brands tested contained a level of lead above 0.1 parts per million, which is equal to the FDA’s limit for lead in candy.
Last month, an independent science lab carried out the lead examinations on red lipsticks purchased in Boston, San Francisco, Minneapolis and Connecticut.
Stacy Malkan of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics said, “We want the companies to immediately reformulate their products to get the lead out and ultimately, really we need to change the laws and force these companies to be accountable to women's health.”
The FDA stated that the worries relating to lead in lipstick have been brought up infrequently in the print media and online.
Stephanie Kwisnek, a FDA spokeswoman, said, “These concerns have not generally been supported by FDA's own analysis of products on the market. In the present case, we are looking into the specific details of the issues raised. We will need to confirm the factual basis of these reports independently in order to determine what action, if any, may be needed to protect public health.”
Among the top brands tested positive for lead included L'Oreal Colour Riche "True Red" - 0.65 ppm, L'Oreal Colour Riche "Classic Wine" - 0.58 ppm, Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor "Maximum Red" - 0.56 ppm and Dior Addict "Positive Red" - 0.21 ppm.
L’Oreal has challenged any claims its products have injurious constituents, saying in an e-mail report reported by the San Francisco Chronicle that its products have been carefully assessed and examined by the company’s medical scientists, practicians, druggists and doctors and are according to federal rules.
