FBI uses malware to track a skilled criminal

FBI uses malware to track a skilled criminalMalware is not only used by cyber criminal; even the U. S. government agencies like FBI are resorting to use malware when other tactics fail, fresh media reports revealed.

The Washington Post has reported that the FBI used malware to track a skilled criminal known as "Mo" who was really good at covering his online tracks.

Using differed forms of Internet communications, "Mo" had made a number of bomb threats at airports and universities across the U. S. last year. While the threats kept causing disruption to police, he successfully kept out of reach the police.

The problem forced the FBI to call in its hackers, who emailed an advanced piece of malware to Mo's Yahoo mail address.  The malware allowed the FBI not only track Mo's location and browse his online history, but also turn on his computer's webcam without letting its indicator to turn on.

The report said, "The most powerful FBI surveillance software can covertly download files, photographs and stored e-mails, or even gather real-time images by activating cameras connected to computers, say court documents and people familiar with this technology."

The revelation can trigger another backlash against the government intelligence agency, particularly NSA, which is already receiving criticism for spying on people.
