Family of Nepalese man shot by police demands truth

Family of Nepalese man shot by police demands truth Hong Kong  - The brother of a homeless Nepalese man shot dead by a police officer has demanded a full explanation from Hong Kong's police and government, a media report said Friday.

Ram Limbu, who arrived in Hong Kong from Britain and identified the body of his younger brother Dil Bahadur Limbu on Thursday, is also taking legal advice about his relative's death, the South China Morning Post said.

"I want to know what is going on. I am very upset," Limbu said, who is helping to arrange for his brother's wife and their 7-year-old daughter to travel to Hong Kong from Nepal.

Limbu is to stay in Hong Kong for four weeks to find out the circumstances of his brother's death on March 17.

Police said an officer fired two shots, one of which struck the younger Limbu in the head, after the man allegedly attacked the officer with a wooden chair. The officer was following up a complaint about a homeless man urinating on a hillside in the Ho Man Tin district of the city.

Surendra Limbu, chairman of the Nepalese Community Club, of no relation but a friend of the Limbu brothers, said: "We just want to know the truth about anybody responsible for this, not about compensation."

"All the facts related to the incident should be brought to the court," the spokesman for the Non-Resident Nepali Association's Asia-Pacific regional coalition, Ganesh Ijam, added. "The police should apologize to the victim's family if the inquest finds out the case is an unlawful killing."

A police report on Limbu's death will be submitted to the coroner by the end of April.

Home Affairs undersecretary Florence Hui said the government wanted to express its condolences to the family and would try to offer assistance. (dpa)
