EU leaders gear up for tax haven crackdown

EU leaders gear up for tax haven crackdown Berlin  - The European Union's (EU) major economies are hoping to enlist the support of all 27 EU member states as they gear up for a battle to crackdown on tax havens.

The move follows the agreement at the weekend of the EU's seven leading economies to launch action to clamp down on tax havens as part of a push to overhaul the global financial system in the wake of the world economic crisis.

Hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Sunday's meeting was called to set out Europe's position on financial market reform and tackling the recession ahead of the April summit in London of the Group of 20 (G20) major economic powers.

A German government spokesman said on Monday that the EU leaders now hoped to extend the points of agreement at Sunday's meeting to all EU member states.

This also includes the EU leaders plans to forge a so-called black list of tax havens as well so-called uncooperative states before the G20 meeting in London.

In addition to Merkel, also attending the weekend meeting were the leaders of France, Britain, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.

The Czech Republic, which currently hold the EU's sixth month rotating presidency, also attended the meeting along with Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker who as president of the euro group represented the 16-member eurozone.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso along with European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet and Bank of England governor Mervyn King were also at Sunday's meeting. (dpa)
