Estate version of Fiat 500 planned

Estate version of Fiat 500 plannedTurin, Italy  - The Italian car maker Fiat is apparently considering plans to build an estate version of the Fiat 500, competing with the MINI Clubman.

"An estate version is possible," a Fiat spokesman said in Germany pointing out that the car maker is working on plans to extend the model segment.

A powerful Abarth version of the new Fiat 500 is scheduled for this year with a convertible planned for 2009.

Images of an estate version showed an extended roofline like its 1960s predecessor "Giardiniera". Apart from the tailgate and alloy roof rails, the vehicle is identical to the basic 500 two-door.

The choice of three engines for the estate also starts with the entry level 1.2-litre 69 hp unit. The 1.3-litre is fitted with a 75 hp multi-jet diesel engine. (dpa)
