Equal water for all, civic body to change supply timetable

WaterThose who do not get enough water because they at the end of the water supply chain and the water’s force is reduced to a trickle by the time it reaches will soon get some relief.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday decided to change the timetable for water supply starting mid-November. Some of the zones will get water during the day while others will get it at night. This will ensure that though water is supplied once a day, the pressure of the water will be high.

“If the supply is distributed during day and night then we will be able to maintain the water content at the reservoirs. That will build the water pressure and people living at the fag end will get more water,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner, Anil Diggikar. Diggikar made the announcement on the floor of the civic body’s house.

The city is presently facing 15 per cent cut on supply time as well as water pressure.

Diggikar also said that a team of experts is looking at the exact demand of each ward. “The team will study the commercial and individual demand of water in each ward. This study will help us provide equal water supply based on the population,” Diggikar said.

The water crisis assumed political colour as the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party did not miss its chance to blame the Shiv Sena, which rules the BMC, for water shortage and said that they lacked will to fix the problem.

The city gets 3,400 mld (million litres a day) of water against its demand for 4,200 mld.

Diggikar told the BMC house that junior engineers will be given the task to fix the leakages and action will be taken against those who do not attend to the problems.

The civic body will also hire an event management agency to spread awareness on saving water.
