End of Holocene Epoch, Time to Welcome Anthropocene Epoch: Report

Several members of scientific community think human species have entered a new geologic era: the Anthropocene Epoch.

A report published Thursday in journal Science suggested that use of plastic, concrete and other fossil fuels that we burnt has changed the planet enough to declare the beginning of a new era and end of the thousands of years old Holocene Epoch.

Last about seven decades played a vital role in altering the earth. In the time, humans not only went far from our Holocene ancestors, but also took our planet towards a very tough phase, according to the report.

Over the time, we have started pollution our environment by generating combinations of plastic, metals, fly ash, reactive nitrogen and pesticides. The increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases, rapidly melting glaciers, and many other climate related changes have been proving that Holocene Epoch, which began about 12,000 years ago, has ended and the new era begins, the report stated.

“The appearance of manufactured materials in sediments, including aluminum, plastics, and concrete, coincides with global spikes in fallout radionuclides and particulates from fossil fuel combustion. Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles have been substantially modified over the past century”, as per the Science report.

It is not wrong to say that global warming, which has been propelling every years, has combined with detritus used today and imprint that researchers many years will study it by collecting samples from the earth’s core. The report also warned that our technological progress could have similar impact on earth as the asteroid strike years ago had on dinosaurs.

There are reports that organizations like International Commission on Stratigraphy that sets such definitions could consider the matter later this year.
