Eighth death from Legionnaires' disease in Quincy
Health and veterans affairs officials provided an updated on an outbreak on Legionnaires' disease. They shared that eighth person has died from the disease in Quincy, Illinois and 41 people are sick from it. The latest death has taken place outside the Illinois Veterans' Home.
The officials said that there is no evidence that the recent cases in the city have connection with the outbreak at the veterans' home. Illinois Department of Public Health spokeswoman Melaney Arnold said that around 400 people live at the veterans' home.
The recent outbreak is linked to outbreaks in New York City and at a California prison, where inmates have fallen sick. In New York, 12 people died and 128 became sick due to the disease, which was announced over in August.
At San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco, six inmates have fallen sick and 95 inmates are under observation. Adams County Health Department Director Jerrod Welch said that the eighth person who died from the disease was an elderly and having underlying medical conditions that increased his chance of getting exposed to the disease.
More fatalities are possible, said the state public health director, as the disease has a two-week incubation period. As of Wednesday, 49 people have fallen sick in Quincy and out of them, 45 lived in the facility.
Legionnaires' disease symptoms include breathing difficulties, coughing, fever and muscle aches. The disease cannot be transmitted person to person. A person has to inhale contaminated water vapor and then he will fell sick.
