Egg prices to continue to fall
It is believed that the egg prices in the country would continue to fall after recording a fall of about 10 per cent from the level of Rs 3 per egg a month earlier.
Estimates show that the poultry farmers are incurring losses at current prices that are lower than the same period of the previous year. Eggs are being sold at the rate of about Rs 2.80-2.90 in most areas. The wholesale prices of eggs was about Rs 3 an egg while these ranged Rs 2.40 to Rs 2.50 an egg in the same period of the previous year.
Experts say that the prices and demand of eggs have been affected due to instances of avian influenza in Bangalore. The government of Kerala has imposed a ban on the import of eggs from Karnataka due to reports of the flu. Of the total egg production of 35 million per day, about 15 million were exported to the state of Kerala.
The demand for eggs remains sluggish in the southern market due to the fears related to the flu and experts say that the prices are expected to fall further.
