E-cigarette usage could lead to ‘regular’ smoking

It has been reported in a new study that more use of e-cigarette could pave the way to regular smoking. The study led by Dr. Brian Primack, an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine appeared in JAMA Pediatrics - The Journal of the American Medical Association.

It has been found in the study that 11 of 16 e-cigarette users of the ages between 16 and 26 were smoking tobacco with a year of electronic cigarette use in the beginning. It was found that 128 of 678 participants, approximately 19%, were not using e-cigarettes in the beginning of their smoking experience.

According to Primack, “Our report did find that initial e-cigarette users were very likely to progress to regular cigarette smoking. It is much more palatable to use an e-cigarette for the first time. Most e-cigarettes deliver nicotine. This is sort of the biochemical approach”.

He added that they release nicotine; however, they release it more slowly than conventional cigarettes. So, Primack said that one is aware about the reason behind transition; however, many assumptions are there.

Primack said that a new user can begin with e-cigarettes and after that it leads to use of regular cigarettes when they become comfortable with the nicotine and when they feel more requirement. He added that many things are not known regarding the health effects of e-cigarette use, and they should be strictly regulated as real cigarettes until more is revealed in the matter.
