Dokic's dream teeters with loss in wild card playoffs
Melbourne, Australia - Jelena Dokic will have to fight to keep her tennis dream alive after losing to a Brisbane teenager Tuesday in the wild card playoffs for next month's Australian Open.
Former world number four Dokic lost on the second day of play at Melbourne Park, falling to Monica Wejnert 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
"She's probably the highest ranked I've beaten so far in my career, so it's great," the winner said. "I was a bit nervous coming in, but then I stabilized and it was good."
Dokic, 25, still has one final chance to stay alive, needing to win a match Wednesday to have any hope of reaching the quarter-finals at the round-robin event.
The format also saved Queensland teenager Bernard Tomic as the 16-year-old fights to reach the main draw.
Tomic earned a stay-alive win on Tuesday when his opponent was forced to retire with a quadricep strain midway through their third set.
Tomic, the Australian Open junior champion, plays Wednesday against experienced Joe Sirianni, more than twice the youngster's age at 33 and an experienced ATP fringe player.
Tomic has been living down an ugly incident this month when he was yanked off the court by his irate father over foot faults that the elder Tomic said were not being called.
Tomic senior was forced into a weekend apology, but his son's immediate tennis fate rests with an International Tennis Federation investigation of the incident. (dpa)
