At the inauguration of the three-day national 'cyber safety' seminar organized by the Kerala Police, to mark the Cyber Safety Day, the Director General of Police (DGP), Jacob Punnoose, said that it is time the police starts taking cyber crime seriously, more so since there are no jurisdictional boundaries to mark the areas of online criminal activity.

The inaugural function was presided over by Vinson M Paul, Inspector General of Police, Ernakulam Range. The comprehensive seminar on cyber safety will have a special session on public awareness to cyber crime, as well as feature technical papers by cyber crime experts.

Saying that the police personnel should be 'fully equipped' - both mentally and technologically - to fight the cyber crimes, Punnoose added that, initiating a step in the direction of dealing with software-related crimes, the Kerala police intend setting up cyber cells in all the districts.

However, admitting that a lot more needs to be done, DGP Punnoose told reporters on the sidelines of the seminar: "Cyber cells alone were not sufficient, we should have cyber crime fighting tools and interaction facilities with other states."

Referring to the recently-provided Internet connectivity in all police stations, Punnoose said that updating computer related information regularly was equally important. The DGP added that police personnel will also be provided cyber training in the near future.
