Delta flight makes emergency landing at Montgomery airportA Delta Air Lines flight had to make an emergency landing at the Montgomery Regional Airport on Sunday afternoon after the pilots noticed smoke and fumes in the cockpit of the plane.

The Delta Flight 534 from Cancun, Mexico to Atlanta landed at the airport in the afternoon yesterday and no injuries were recorded. A total of 184 passengers and six crew members got off the plane and were checked by the emergency services. The airline said that Flight 534 was scheduled to leave Cancun at 12:37 p. m. local time.

Phil Perry, executive director of the Montgomery Regional Airport said, "The firemen determined there was no danger, but they had to come off the plane." He also said that the airport provided the passengers with coffee and sandwiches during their wait.

The passengers were boarded on a second plane Sunday evening that left Montgomery before 6:45 p. m. CDT to arrive at Atlanta just before 7:15 p. m. EDT. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said that the Boeing 757 aircraft was flying form Mexico when it was forced to land at Montgomery.

Delta Air Lines spokesman Russell Cason said that the fluorescent bulb ballast burned out and caused a smell in the cockpit.
