Delhi in search of Ranji Trophy captain
New Delhi, Dec 11 : It remained unclear Friday who will lead Delhi in their last league match against Bengal Dec 15 with skipper Virat Kohli joining the national squad for the One-day International series against Sri Lanka.
The selectors were to take the decision on the captaincy Friday but postponed the meeting to Saturday.
"We will announce a decision on the captain tomorrow," the chairman of selectors, Chetan Chauhan told IANS.
The 21-year-old Kohli, who was the captain of the World Cup winning under-19 team, was appointed the stand-in-skipper for the home tie against Saurashtra as regular captain Aakash Chopra took leave to get married. Under Kohli's captaincy Delhi registered their first win of the season after two drawn matches and an embarrassing innings loss against Uttar Pradesh.
He was thus retained the captain for the match against Maharashtra even though Chopra made himself available for the tie. Chopra, however, pulled out of the match, complaining of fever. Kohli led the side to its second win of the season Friday.
Chopra who was the designated captain for the season has apparently expressed his reluctance to continue as captain. That leaves only former captain Mithun Manhas and in form all-rounder Rajat Bhatia as possible candidates for captaincy.
But a call on Bhatia's fitness, who strained his hamstring during Delhi's 10-wicket win over Maharashtra, and Chopra, who told IANS he is down with flu will be taken Saturday.
Chauhan said he has asked coach Vijay Dahiya to speak to the players and report the players' fitness by Saturday morning before the selectors meet.(IANS)
