Delhi HC Appoints Team To Probe Negligence Case At Safdarjung Hospital

Delhi High Court The Delhi High Court has appointed a group of medical specialists in order to inspect an alleged medical negligence report against the doctors in Safdarjung Hospital.

The report was given by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM).

The case to be looked upon was of an 11-month-old boy whose leg was removed surgically because of the alleged carelessness by doctors at Safdarjung Hospital in January 2007.

In a recent judgment, the division bench of Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice Sanjiv Khanna formed the group comprising the Head of the Department of Orthopaedic, AIIMS, or his nominee and surgeon J S Arora.

Taking a suo motu cognizance over the boy's reported story after he was admitted to Safdarjung hospital owing to a fall and pain, the Bench has directed them to deeply inspect the report as well as the patient, and present their judgment within a period of five weeks.

The HC order came after the ACMM report failed to report any strong finding over the matter.

The ACMM said during inquiry the doctor had alleged the boy's parents for delay in bringing the child to hospital and not giving permission to operate the infection area that's why the boy's leg was removed due to gangrene.

The Bench observed, "On one hand, it is stated that no definite finding can be given with regard to medical negligence but at the same time it is stated that there was some lack of skill or medical acumen in applying hip spice or diagnosing the condition..."

The Bench now listed the matter for further hearing on July 15.
