The accident
Police, on Monday, arrested a 20-year-old student in connection with a hit-and-run case, which had, the previous night, resulted in the death of a hotel employee at Opera Theatre junction in Ashoknagar.
Degree student Selvin Marc Remedeo allegedly fled the scene after his car, which was speeding down Brigade Road, hit a two-wheeler and bicycle at 11.45 pm, killing the bike rider Raghuram Gowda, 27, and injuring his colleague Jitendra Kumar. However, the cyclist managed to escape with minor injuries.

Nabbed in 10 hours
Though the accused drove away, the car (KA-03-C-8178) had left ample evidence at the accident spot.
"Since the registration number plate had fallen off the vehicle, we traced the accused within 10 hours. We have arrested him, and booked him under Section 304 (a). He will be produced before the magistrate on Tuesday,'' ACP (Adugodi) Lokesh said, adding that the driver was drunk when the accident occurred.
However, other police officers refuted Lokesh's statement, saying Remedeo was sober at the time of mishap.

Victim's version
Jitendra Kumar said that Raghuram and he were returning home after work at Konark Hotel on Residency Road when tragedy struck.
"Raghuram tried to avoid the car,
but it knocked us down. He was rushed to the Bowring Hospital in an autorickshaw, where he was declared dead on arrival," Kumar, who suffered a fractured leg, said.
The accused, son of businessman Felix Remedeo, is a resident of Richmond Road. He was returning home after visiting his friends when the accident occurred.

Only son
The deceased, Raghuram, was the son of security guard Puttaswamy, a native of Mysore. He had been working at the Konark Hotel for the past three years. Besides his father, he leaves behind his mother, a heart patient, and an elder sister. He was staying with his colleagues on Kamaraj Road.
Raghuram held a degree in computer science. According to Shasidhar, cashier of Konark Hotel, Raghuram had taken up the job of the hotel's captain as he could not find any alternative employment.

Previous cases
January 26, 2009: Karthik Somaiah (30) fatally knocked down four people at Indiranagar 100-Feet-Road and fled. He surrendered after 12 hours.
March 8, 2007: Nikhil G Thanvade (29), a manager at an English weekly publication, hit and ran over three postal employees at Minsk Square on Raj Bhavan Road. He was arrested two hours after the incident.
March 19, 2006: Arun Kumar, sub-inspector was hit and run over by a Scorpio car on Cubbon Road. The accused, reportedly drag-racers, are still absconding.
