Defence Minister reviews security with three services chiefs
India’s union Defence Minister A K Antony has reviewed the security situation in the country in a meeting with the three chiefs of defence services.
Mr. Antony held a meeting with Army Chief General V K Singh, Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma and IAF Chief Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne. Defence Secretary Shashikant Sharma was also present in the meeting to review the different aspects like status of Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir, security situation in North-Eastern states, security of Indian coastline and deployment of forces along the land borders.
The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah has asked for the revocation of the AFSPA from some parts of the state. However, the army does not agree with his view on the matter. The central government has asked the J&K chief minister to wait at least for some months before revoking the act from areas like Srinagar, Badgam, Jammu and Samba.
Antony has already asked for developing collective and innovative measures to combat terrorism in the country. While speaking at the Fifth South Asia Seminar organized by Institute for Defence Studies and Analysis (IDSA), the Defence Minister had remarked that the security situation in the country physical, economic, geostrategic aspects as well as political aspects.
