Datawind dismisses reports suggesting Aakash 2 is made in China
UK's technology firm, Datawind has dismissed media reports in India that suggest that the company's low cost Aakash 2 device is actually made in China. The company has claimed that the device is an innovative product produced in India.
Some reports suggest that the company might have directly acquired the device ready to use from Chinese manufacturers. A report in the Hindustan Times cited a source to claim that DataWind did not play a role in the design or manufacturing of the tablet and directly purchased it from China.
The media report suggests that the company acquired ,000 `A-13' tablets from four manufacturers in Shenzhen and Hong Kong between 26 October and 7 November. It said that the tablets were purchased for $42 per unit, which is the price at which the company is supplying them to the Indian government.
The Indian authorities have placed an order of 100,000 units of the tablet that are meant t empower higher education students in the country and fill the digital divide. Datawind had reportedly ended its relationship with Hyderbad based vendor Quad Electronics in January after it found that the company has breached its intellectual property rights.
DataWind is offering its new Aakash 2 tablet computer in the Indian market after it developed older Aakash tablet as part of the government's initiative to provide affordable tablets to students in the country. The newer tablet, Aakash 2, which is officially named Ubislate 7 is believed to be a better alternative to the original version.
