Datawind becomes India’s largest tablet makerDatawind, which is the maker of affordable Aakash tablets, has emerged as the largest manufacturer of tablet computers in the Indian market during the first quarter of 2013.

According to the data from market research firm CyberMedia Research, the UK based firm become the largest maker of tablet computers in the Indian market even without the Akash tablet during the first quarter of the year. Datawind had about 15 per cent market share in the tablet market compared to Micromax that had about 12 per cent share during the first quarter of the year.

The data also showed that the sales of tablet computers fell 17 per cent in the first quarter of this year even as customers moved from desktop and laptops to touch screen devices in the country. The data also showed that 9,05,000 tablets were sold during the period compared to 1,097,902 units in the previous quarter.

The company said in a statement that Akash, which is the world's lowest cost computing access device, has been delivered to the educational institution with a one year warranty on the devices at Rs 2,263. The company also said that the competitive tablets are also available in the open market with a price tag of Rs. 5000.
