Dad Damir could still derail Jelena’s fairytale at Oz Open

Dad Damir could still derail Jelena’s fairytale at Oz OpenMelbourne, Jan. 27 : Jelena Dokic''s fairytale Australian Open campaign could still be derailed should her tyrant father Damir choose to land up.

As she prepares for her quarter-final against world No. 3 Dinara Safina tonight, there are fears Dokic''s estranged father Damir - and his sniping from 15,000 km away in Serbia - could affect her renowned mental strength ahead of a match that will stop the nation.

The 25-year-old has made it clear she wants nothing to do with the man who forced her to leave Australia in 2001.

And, after hinting he might make his way to Melbourne if his daughter''s dream run continues to the final, it seems Damir has had a change of heart. According to the Daily Telegraph, Damir has vowed not to go ahead with the travel plans after the stress of watching his daughter''s three-set win on Sunday night - via the internet - landed him in a Belgrade hospital.

There are still concerns, however, Damir''s influence - even from half a world away - could prove costly for Dokic''s dream of Australian Open glory.

Estranged from Dokic for years because of his ugly off-court antics, Damir apparently now concedes his presence would put too much pressure on her.

"I haven''t had any contact (with him),'''' Dokic said on Sunday.

"It''s his decision (whether or not to come to Australia) but I''ve said always my whole story with him is finished. It would have to be an unbelievable miracle for him to change. I don''t see that happening. We are really different and really disagree on pretty much everything,'''' she added.

Dokic yesterday cancelled a scheduled practice session and is receiving treatment for a strained lateral ligament in her left ankle ahead of tonight''s quarterfinal. (ANI)
