CVS drops over two dozen prescription drugs from its list of covered medicines for 2016

CVS has revealed in an announcement that it has planned to drop more than two dozen prescription drugs from its list of covered medicines for 2016. CVS Pharmacy stores will still sell the drugs.

However, insurance cover will no longer be available to customers who carry prescription benefit insurance with CVS/Caremark. Cheaper equivalents that are still covered by its insurance plan are available for medicines dropped from the list.

CVS, the nation’s second-largest pharmacy brand manager, said the list for the drugs going to be dropped includes Viagra as well as many widely prescribed drugs for diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

As far as Viagra is concerned, coverage from CVC will only be available for that drug’s main competitor, Cialis. Local pharmacist Janet Chin says that it’s unfortunate that customers would not have a choice to make.

“I can say clinically, I don’t like restricting patients. There are some patients that might have some small reaction to one brand versus the next”, said Chin.

She says that some patients might experience different result after taking the new medications. She added that older patients are highly likely to face troubles from changes in medications as they might be used to a certain pill of a size and shape.

Changing the manufacturers within that same medication could make them feel as if they have received the wrong medication, said Chin.

CVS said in a statement that equally effective products with lower overall costs will still be available for those drugs that are removed.
