Srinagar, Feb 14 : Life in Jammu and Kashmir is paralysed as curfew continues for the sixth consecutive day in the wake of the execution of militant Afzal Guru, who was sentenced to death 10 years ago for an attack on the parliament in 2001.

The authorities enforced a strict curfew in Srinagar and in several parts of the Kashmir valley where thousands of police and soldiers patrolled deserted streets and urged residents to stay indoors.

The curfew has put life out of gear for the locals.

Srinagar, which was hustling and bustling last week with the rush of tourists in the valley, has suddenly come to a stand still with absolutely no movement.

Daily life is disrupted, as people are facing difficulties in getting essential commodities.

A local, Bhuran Ali, said that the authorities are paying no heed to their problems as curfew continues for the sixth day.

"We are facing lot of problems as we are unable to get essential commodities including milk, vegetables. We are troubled. The people who are unwell also face problems as they are unable to get medicines. We want that the curfew should be removed and peace should prevail," said Ali.

All the business establishments and schools remain shut. Also shops in the markets have remained closed, since Saturday (February 09).

Curfew was relaxed in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

The execution took place on Saturday (February 09) after the president rejected a mercy petition from Afzal Guru.

Restrictions on movements were imposed in major towns of the Valley early on Saturday in anticipation of protests against the hanging.

Hundreds of paramilitary forces and local police were deployed to the region, which is prone to separatist violence.

Five gunmen stormed the heavily guarded parliament complex in New Delhi on December 13, 2001 carrying grenades, guns and explosives, but security forces killed them before they could enter the lawmakers'' chamber. Ten other people, mostly security officers, were killed in the exchange of fire. (ANI)
