Congress says Karnataka Assembly polls dates announced in ‘great hurry’

Congress PartyNew Delhi, Apr 2: Expressing its unhappiness over the announcement of dates for the Karnataka Assembly polls, the Congress Party on Wednesday said that the Election Commission has declared the election schedule “in a great hurry.”

“We don't know when the final rolls will be published. It has been done in a great hurry. President's rule would still have to be extended, so why such a great hurry,” AICC general secretary in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka Prithviraj Chavan told reporters here.

“The electoral rolls of all the districts have not been published yet. The maps for seven districts (after delimitation) have not been done,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of India announced that the Assembly elections in Karnataka would be held on May 10, 16 and 22.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswami said that the counting of votes for the 224 Assembly seats would take place on May 25.

With the announcement of the dates, the Model Code of Conduct comes into immediate effect.

Karnataka came under President's rule in November last year after the collapse of the BJP-JDS coalition Government. (ANI)
