Congress leaders in Jammu call for boycott of Chinese goods
Jammu, Oct 2 : Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir Friday called for a boycott of Chinese goods in protest Beijing's "mischief" in treating Jammu and Kashmir as a "disputed territory".
At a big rally in this city, Jammu and Kashmir's winter capital, to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, several Congress leaders said that China could be rebuffed by boycotting its goods.
Reports of the Chinese embassy in India issuing visas on separate sheets stapled to the passports of residents of Jammu and Kashmir, and not stamping the passport itself, has triggered much anger in Jammu, the Hindu dominated region of Jammu and Kashmir.
Congress member parliament from Jammu Madan Lal Sharma exhorted the party workers to spread this message of " boycott" of Chinese goods. "It is our duty that we should not allow even a single item from China to be brought to our homes, and no one should buy Chinese goods."
This message was echoed by Mangat Ram, a former deputy chief minister of the state, in the presence of the Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan and state Congress unit chief Saifuddin Soz.
"As he (Mahatama Gandhi) delivered us freedom by boycotting the British goods and taught us the lesson of self-reliance, we should teach Beijing a lesson by boycotting Chinese goods," Mangat Ram said.
Chinese goods, particularly crockery, shoes and mobile phones, are quite popular in India.(IANS)
