Coffee Consumption good for Heart!

Published in the journal Heart, a research has claimed that moderate coffee consumptions leads to clean arteries, thereby reducing risks of heart disease. The study was conducted on more than 25,000 people and all were asked to have calcium scans on their hearts. Calcium accumulation in arteries significantly determines one's risk of contracting heart disease as high calcium levels in arteries lead to plaque or blockages building up.

The researchers at the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in Seoul deduced through the study that the participants who consumed three to five regular sized cups of coffee per day exhibited fewer signs of blockages that those who either did not drink coffee at all or drank more than five cups of coffee.

The study also considered as other risk factor for heart like weight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, level of exercise, smoking, etc. The researchers said that coffee contains a lot of heart healthy antioxidants and other beneficial chemicals for body. The study found the lowest levels of arterial calcium among those who drank three or four cups daily.

The researchers, however, called for further research to confirm the link between lesser risk of coronary heart disease and coffee consumption.

"Further research is warranted to confirm our findings and establish the biological basis of coffee's potential preventive effects on coronary artery disease", they said.

Results of previous studies have showed that coffee consumption also decreases the risk of diabetes, Parkinson's, stroke, malignant melanoma, liver disease etc.
