Chiron centaur may possess ring surrounding it
A group of celestial bodies in our solar system have planetary ring systems and Saturn is among the most well-known celestial bodies. Other celestial bodies, having understated dusty rings, include Uranus, Neptune and Jupiter. Earlier, the scientists found a minor planet named Chariklo possessing rings. And according to recent findings, another such object also has the same features.
These bodies are from a class of minor planets called centaurs. Centaurs behave as both asteroids and comets. Previously, it was considered by researchers that centaurs were dormant; however, according to the recent findings, the matter is totally different.
It has been discovered now that a second centaur called Chiron is also having rings, which show that centaurs are livelier than what was considered earlier. According to Amanda Bosh, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, "It's interesting, because Chiron is a centaur - part of that middle section of the solar system, between Jupiter and Pluto, where we originally weren't thinking things would be active, but it's turning out things are quite active".
Earlier also it was known that an object with no surrounding material would show a simple pattern. However, according to the recent findings, Chiron has symmetrical features, indicating that some of the starlight could have been blocked by gas or dust.
As per the researchers, the ring formation had occurred after some other body began breaking up and produced debris, which were drawn into the centaur's orbit. It has also been assumed that the debris may have been left from the creation of Chiron only.
Bosh's team of researchers accurately measured another occultation event and also gave details regarding Chiron and the space around it.
