China milk scandal, Sanlu's former general manager escapes with life imprisonment and a fine
The recent case of presence of melamine in Chinese milk products has once again put question mark on standards of the Chinese products. 21 people have been under trial for involvement in the scandal of contamination of milk products.
Two men received death sentence while Sanlu's former general manager, Tian Wenhua was given life sentence and fined more than pounds 2 million by a Chinese court on Thursday. Others are waiting for judgment.
Men sentenced to death were Zhang Yujun, a manufacturer who sold more than 600 tons of melamine, which is banned from foodstuffs and middleman who added the product at milk collection stations.
Intentional addition of melamine, a toxic industrial compound that can give a fake positive on protein tests to milk killed 6 babies and made 300,000 sick.
Many families were angry about the fact that Tian Wenhua, the woman most widely blamed for the tragedy did not get death sentence. (Pallavi contributed to this report)
