Cheruiyot gets 5,000m gold as Kenya beat Ethiopia again
Berlin - Vivian Cheruiyot got gold this time around as Kenya inflicted another long distance defeat on Ethiopia, in the women's 5,000 metres at the world championships.
Cheruiyot sprinted past title holder Meseret Defar on the home stretch to get the gold in 14 minutes 57.97 second, avenging her defeat against the Ethiopian at the last worlds.
Sylvia Kibet stole the silver from Defar on the line in 14:58.33 for a Kenyan 1-2 a week after Linet Masai had won the 10,000m for them.
Defar, who had faded from first to fifth in the 10,000m, had to settle for the bronze in 14:58.41 minutes while fancied compatriot Meselech Melkamu, the 10,000m silver medallist, came fifth.
Not competing in Berlin due to injury was Ethiopian top star Tirunesh Dibaba, a multiple champion at big events with long distance doubles at the 2005 worlds and 2008 Olympics. (dpa)
