Centre committed to development and peace in Assam: PM

Manmohan SinghNew Delhi, June 9 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Monday reiterated the Centre’s commitment to development and peace in Assam, stating that Assam had received the “highest ever” allocation of Central funds in the past four years.

The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to the implementation of the Rajiv Gandhi Peace Accord. The Prime Minister was speaking to a delegation from Assam comprising of the leaders of All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

He also met Prafulla Mahanta, former Chief Minister of Assam and Jayashree Mahanta.

The Prime Minister said that the Central Government was giving special attention to Assam’s needs under various programmes including National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, National Rural Health Mission, National Urban Renewal Mission and Backward Regions Grant Fund.

Assam has also received special support in the sphere of education, infrastructure development and industrial development.

Dr. Singh stated that the Central Government is taking steps to stop cross border infiltration and illegal migration.

The Prime Minister reiterated his personal commitment to the economic and social development of the State and to peace and security for all people of the State. (ANI)
