CDC: Latest E. coli cases involve people who ate at Chipotle Mexican Grill in Shawnee

On Monday, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said that one E. coli illness case has been reported in Johnson County, along with one case in North Dakota. It said that both the cases involved people who consumed food at the Chipotle Mexican Grill in Shawnee.

The information about the new illnesses has been released by the CDC as part of an update on the wider outbreak. But, that person hasn’t reported consuming food at Chipotle.

Later, Chipotle said that its fourth-quarter comparable-restaurant sales are likely to see 8-10% drop, in comparison to a year earlier, marking the company’s first decline in its history.

All 5 sickened customers have mentioned that they ate at Chipotle between November 18- 26 or nearly 7 days before they fell ill.

According to the CDC, 20 ill people got hospitalized during that outbreak. No deaths were reported.

The FDA said that in all microbial testing conducted by Chipotle, including over 2,500 samples of ingredients, restaurant surfaces and equipment, no E. coli was yielded.

With a motive to determine which ingredient was linked to illness, the Food and Drug Administration carried out a traceback investigation of the FDA-regulated ingredients used in the chicken salad.

It is noteworthy that the company post the outbreak, gave assurance to customers that it would tighten its food safety standards. The initiatives include ingredients’ high-resolution testing and better training for restaurant employees.

Reuters reported that as per the federal agency, the most recent case linked to the outbreak was started on November 3.
