Case of twin teenage sisters killing mother to go to grand jury
Authorities have said that the Georgia case of twin teenage sisters accused of killing their mother is to go to a grand jury next month.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on Wednesday that Tasmiyay and Jasmiyah Whitehead were arrested Friday in the Jan. 14 beating and stabbing death of Conyers beautician Jarmecca "Nikki" Whitehead.
The newspaper also said that they have denied they are responsible for their mother's death, and a grand jury is expected to consider the case June 7.
They came home from school and found their mother's body. One of them flagged down a sheriff's deputy who was in the area on another matter, the sisters have said.
But Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson said evidence has been found tying the girls to the slaying.
Wilson told the Journal-Constitution, "There was a point soon after the murder when a lot of people became suspicious of the two girls."
The arrest of the two 16-year-olds came as no surprise to some of the woman's friends who saw them as difficult children.
Michelle Temple, a friend and former boss of the victim, said, "I never thought they were capable of murder before she died. Who would think that? But after she was murdered, I knew it was them."
Yucca Harris, Whitehead's best friend, said, "The girls wanted to do what they wanted to do." (With Inputs from Agencies)
