Cancer survivors, caregivers participate in annual American Cancer Society's Relay for Life

Dozens of people came together on Saturday from 10 am until 10 am on Sunday to fight against cancer by walking in the annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Survivors and caregivers of all age took laps around the track at Traverse Bay East Middle ground and shared stories. They celebrated the people who have won the battle and those who are still fighting.

Survivor Tracy Welch said, “You know you have the love and support of your family and friends but when strangers come up to you and say I'm thinking of you or keep fighting the fight it just kind of brings it to a whole new level”.

Welch was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2007 and since then has continued to survive cancer since and since made Relay for Life a part of her support system.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nearly 14-million people learn they have cancer every year. This year's event raised more than $84,000 which will go towards cancer research, awareness, and local programming.

Meanwhile, other 100 cancer survivors participated in the annual Relay for Life on Friday at the Woodward County Event Center.

The Survivor's Lap kicked off the event and the caregivers lap honored those who cared for someone with cancer. The evening also included hamburgers and hot dogs, and baskets were auctioned off.
