Dhaka - Violent clashes between two groups of activists belonging to the student wings of the ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party left at least 25 people injured at Jahangirnagar University Friday, police said.

During the clashes, which erupted mainly because of attempts to establish control over the dormitories of the university, the students traded at least 30 gunshots, according to police, but no-one received bullet wounds.

Rival groups beat each other with hockey-sticks, rods and other weapons.

Both groups blamed each other for creating panic in the campus and spoiling the educational atmosphere.

Police fired teargas to establish control over the situation in campus, located 35 kilometres north of the capital Dhaka.

On Thursday, the ruling party student front also clashed with its opponents at Mirpur Homeopathic Medical College in Dhaka over control of the dormitory of the institution.

The media reported a number of violent incidents in educational institutions allegedly by ruling party supporters since the Awami League-alliance government assumed office on January 6 following a landslide victory in the December 29 general elections. (dpa)
