California Woman having Cancer thrown out of Alaska Airlines flight

California woman having a type of blood cancer was not allowed to travel from Hawaii to San Jose on Monday. She and her family were asked to leave the Alaska Airlines flight before takeoff.

On Wednesday, Alaska Airlines confirmed that Elizabeth Sedway was asked to depart from the plane after airline employees consulted with a physician about her condition. Alaska Airlines spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said that they followed the company procedures and the advice of trained medical personnel in the case.

But they do regret the inconvenience caused to Sedway and her family. Egan added that they are carrying out a thorough investigation into the matter.

Egan said that in the flight from Hawaii to the destination, there is opportunity to have an emergency landing for quite a long time while over the ocean. The employees took the decision for the welfare of the customer.

Sedway said that she felt humbled by the attention she received. Sedway shared that she asked a flight attendant that she might need extra time to board as she feels weak. She was also wearing a surgical mask in the boarding area.

Her condition was consulted with a doctor and after the discussion, Sedway was asked to leave from the plane. The family stayed in Hawaii overnight Monday. Sedway said that owing to the delay, she was not able to attend her chemotherapy session.

Egan shared that the airline like many others across the nation uses MedLink to check the health condition of passenger, when concerns are raised. The airline takes the suggestion of medical professional, as the employees are not qualified to make medical decision.
