Breast milk purchased online poses many risks: Study

On Thursday, British experts said buying and drinking human breast milk that is being sold on websites might cause serious health risks.

The websites that claim that breast milk is super food for providing energy, nutrients and helps with erectile dysfunction and cancer can expose consumers to many serious infectious diseases.

Sarah Steele, specialist at the global health and policy unit at Queen Mary University of London, has warned that benefits of breast milk traded via websites in a lucrative market for adult buyers do not stand up clinically.

Steele also added that the milk can prove to be very hazardous if it is used to replace a healthy balanced diet. She mentioned that human breast milk has less protein than other cow's milk.

Steele mentioned that potential buyers should be made aware that is no scientific study evidence proving that direct adult consumption of human milk for medicinal properties offers anything more than a placebo effect.

According to her, failure of women to clean properly when producing milk, failure to sterilize equipment properly, and improper or prolonged storage and transportation of milk is also responsible for exposing consumers to bacterial food-borne illnesses.

Steele noted, "While many online mums claim they have been tested for viruses during pregnancy, many do not realise that [such] screening needs to be undertaken regularly. Sexual and other activities . may expose the women to viruses that they may unwittingly pass on to consumers".
