New Delhi, Mar 20: Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will meet Indian political and business leaders here today to convince them to push for clean technologies and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Blair’s focus is expected to be on the public-private partnerships and how they can facilitate the transfer of clean technologies to bridge differences between developed and developing countries on the setting of new targets for reducing carbon emissions post the 1997 Kyoto protocol.

As adviser to The Climate Group, a non-profit organisation funded by JP Morgan Bank and Swiss insurer Zurich Financial Services, Blair will open the 'Breaking the Climate Deadlock' project to reduce emissions.

The project is aimed at garnering political support across the developed and the developing world for an international agreement by 2009 that will result in greenhouse gas emission reductions.

As part of international advocacy, The Climate Group convenes a meeting called Glenegles Dialogue, a G8 (Group of Eight) initiative, which brings together 20 of the world’s leading polluting countries, including the G8 and the major emerging economies of Brazil, China, Mexico and South Africa and allows them to informally discuss new measures to tackle climate change outside the formal negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention in Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The UK and India are already involved in a partnership to study the impact of global warming on India. (ANI)
