There is mention of discontinuing the sale of fruits and vegetables in the market in a letter drafted by Minister of State for Health, Dinesh Trivedi to the Union Health Secretary, due to the presence of harmful chemicals which may lead to various diseases like nervous breakdowns, sterility and neurotic complications.

In today's scenario, everybody is putting stress on consuming green vegetables as a staple diet but instead of making us healthy these vegetables are damaging our health.

In the race to increase the production and meet the growth in demand, farmers are using hormone slots in the vegetables. Major concern lies on the part of irreparable damage caused by these hormones in the human body when consumed for a longer period of time. Even the public and government authorities are aware of this malpractice but no action has been taken so far, so Trivedi has also stressed on taking action against farmers in his letter.

At present farmers are using an injection which contains oxytocin called as 'love hormone' which increase the production of fruits and vegetables by helping them to grow fast. Generally oxytocin is used by doctors to provoke labour, control bleeding after delivery and stimulate secretion of breast milk. It also works as a neurotransmitter to the brain.

Oxytocin comes under Schedule-H drug and it is banned in the country for its usage on animals, but still it is available in bulk to the farmers. Generally the injection is injected in pumpkin, watermelon, brinjal, gourd and cucumber to help them grow faster and look perfect.

In his letter, Trivedi also points out the use of chemicals like copper sulphates which is used for coloring fruits and vegetables. He had requested the Union Health secretary to take immediate actions with this regard as these chemicals prove to be hazardous and he also said that the adverse effects of these toxins should be properly investigated.
