Bangladesh requests India to commit 15 lakh cotton bales each yearBangladesh's commerce ministry has requested its India counterpart to commit at least 15 lakh bales of cotton each year.

Ghulam Muhammed Quader, commerce minister of Bangladesh, said that the draft for the same had already been almost finalized and the deal could be hit in the next two to three months.

The deal would mean that In case Indian government puts a ban on cotton exports and at the time of the ban it has already exported ten lakh bales of cotton to Bangladesh then it would have to export another five lakh bales of cotton to Bangladesh in any condition in that year.

Speaking about the potential deal, Quader said, "The draft is almost finalized, and should be signed in the next 2-3 months after further negotiations."

The commerce minister of the neighbouring country added that that they would negotiate for even a higher threshold if possible.

It may be noted here that readymade garments account for 80 per cent of Bangladesh's total exports, and the neighbouring country imports nearly 35 per cent to 40 per cent of its cotton requirement from India.

India and Bangladesh are making efforts to further strengthen their ties. During a recent visit to Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka, Indian Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, the two countries signed an extradition treaty to tackle acts of trans-national criminals and fugitives.
