Bangladesh reaffirms one-China policy

ChinaDhaka - Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Tuesday reaffirmed the country's "one China policy" in an effort to further boost Sino-Bangladesh relations and cooperation.

"Bangladesh's one China policy remained unimpaired as it was in the past; and the same will remain in force in the future," Foreign Minister Bidu Moni said in a meeting with Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, Zheng Qingdian.

Moni is part of the new administration of Sheikh Hasina Wazed. The Awami League-led alliance government took office in early January following last month's peaceful elections, ending nearly two years of military-backed government.

Moni said Bangladesh and China have historically strong relations, which he said will be deepened in the future.

Zheng made similar statements.

"The Chinese side appreciated the unswerving support from the Bangladesh side on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet, human rights and so," Zheng said in a statement issued after the meeting. The two sides exchanged views on how to develop political, trade and cultural cooperation between Dhaka and Beijing.

Sino-Bangladesh friendship has become a model which demonstrates how countries with different social systems and cultural backgrounds can interact harmoniously, said Zheng. (dpa)
