Balbo set to start coaching Treviso after failed attempt
Rome - Former Argentine striker Abel Balbo Thursday was set to begin coaching Treviso, who hired him back hours after he walked out on the Serie B tail-enders.
Balbo, 42, on Wednesday left the team's training ground just minutes after starting his first coaching session. Sporting director Giuseppe Cannella, who earlier this week had suggested his hiring to replace Luca Gotti, also resigned with the Argentine.
"Balbo understood me," Italian media quoted club president Ettore Setten as saying late Wednesday. "Beside him, Giuseppe Cannella is also back. We can go ahead."
Treviso players refused to train with Balbo on Tuesday, apparently due to the absence of the team doctor.
The team showed up Wednesday, but Balbo left the pitch shortly after the start of the training session.
It appears that the team opposed the firing of Gotti, whom they had backed already when the club tried to replace him in late January.
Balbo, a former international striker, played in Italy from 1989 to 2002 with Udinese, Roma, Parma and Fiorentina. He played three World Cup competitions with Argentina, winning the title in 1990.
Before beginning his coaching career, he was a musician, performing songs in Italian and Spanish, and a commentator on the public station RAI Radio 1. (dpa)
