Bahraini customs foil 26.5 million dollars drug smuggling operation
Manama, Bahrain - Customs officials in Bahrain said Tuesday that they succeeded in foiling an attempt to smuggle 34,344 kilograms of heroin and 1,331 kilograms of opium onto the Gulf island.
The estimated value of the drug seizure - which came Monday evening- was put at 10 million Bahraini dinars (26.5 million US dollars).
A Ministry of Interior statement said customs agents suspected a truck loaded with furniture as it attempted to enter the country via the King Fahad Causeway, which links Bahrain to Saudi Arabia.
The statement did not specify the name of the "neighboring Gulf state" which the shipment originated from or the furniture importer into the country, saying only that the Asia driver of the truck was arrested after being charged with smuggling.(dpa)
