Baby with half skull celebrates first birthday
Jaxon Strong was not expected to live long when he was born. But the child with half of his brain and skull missing has beaten all odds and recently celebrated his first birthday. His parents were shattered when they learned about the matter.
During Brittany Buell’s pregnancy, she was told that "Jax's" brain had been extremely malformed. She was warned by doctors that he was not likely to survive the pregnancy. Doctors told Brittany, and her husband Brandon that the baby could be terminated, but Jaxon’s parents did not lose hope.
Brittany told the Daily Mail that she was shattered as the matter was heartbreaking. However, last August 27, Jaxon was born and weighed four pounds.
According to Brandon, "It was very emotional. I remember holding him on day two and listening to the doctors say my son would probably never walk, never talk, never know when he's hungry, or never hear or see. They really did not expect him to make it".
He added that they did everything they could to help the baby tackle the condition and he has shown the fighting spirit since his birth. Jaxon was diagnosed with Microhydranencephaly, which is a very rare condition. According to the CDC, nearly one in 4,859 babies is born with it each year in the United States.
Brittany told that she always think and knows that any day could be Jaxon’s last day and he may not be there with them. However, she said that she feels blessed to get so much support.
"Every doctor we've talked to is fascinated that Jaxon is here today, and they can no longer predict a prognosis," Brandon Buell wrote in a Facebook post. "We know the reality behind this better than anyone else, what Jaxon is up against, and that his life is already miraculous at this point."
"It's really helpful to finally have a diagnosis that makes sense," Brandon told The Boston Globe. "We came to Boston hoping to find a way to add something to the quality and comfort of his life."
