Authors to raise awareness on Autism

April is observed as National Autism Awareness Month. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared that one in 68 children is diagnosed with autism every year.

This time, authors Kennedy Ryan and Ginger Scott have taken an initiative to raise awareness about the issue. Both of them have organized 'Lift: Authors Raising Autism Awareness'.

Kennedy, author of Be Mine Forever, has shared her experience of raising a son with autism. Kennedy affirmed that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological condition, which is characterized by developmental delays in the areas of communication, socialization and behavior.

Kennedy shared that her son was diagnosed with autism when he was two years old. Since then, she and her husband are adjusting their hopes, dreams and expectations. One of the most difficult adjustments is lack of understanding and compassion from others who do not have any idea about this disease.

She also shared that many authors are including autistic characters in their books. Ginger Scott, A. Meredith Walters and Penelope Ward are among those who taken the help of storytelling to depict those having autism spectrum.

Ginger Scott's book How We Deal With Gravity features a 5-year-old boy on the autism. The boy like other kids of his age tries to learn to navigate a world of playgrounds and classrooms. Scott has brilliantly handled and shows the common environments and situations to explain the things with ASD children.

Scott has explained nuances that characterize many ASD children like difficulty in making eye contact, sensory-based stemming, a bit different speech patterns and trouble understanding. Scott said that every child has strengths and weaknesses. "Autism is a very heavy barrier sometimes, but it also allows you to see the world differently", affirmed Scott.
