'Atom' Processor launched by Intel

With the aim to boost development of local platforms based in Intel architecture, Intel, the leading chipmaker, today unveiled the provision of Atom processors and reference designs in India, keeping in mind the mushrooming market for handheld devices in the nation. 

Atom processor N270 is really small equal to the size of a 25 paisa coin and has been applied in 45 nanometer technology. It is power optimized, which is capable of delivering excellent performance with minimum usage of power, that is below 3 watts. According to R Ravichandran, Director (Sales), Intel South Asia, “The single core processor is validated with Mobile Intel 945GSE Express chipset.”

He further added, “There was tremendous opportunity for these smart solutions in the market as the number of Internet-connected devices reaches into billions, performance expectations rise and device size shrink. The Atom processor, which was powered by 47 million transistors, was expected to power a host of reference designs for the Indian embedded market.”

Other than this, two platform reference designs for the Indian market were also announced by Intel.
