Ash, Dhoni, Bindra, Helen, Kakodkar Named For Padma Awards!
Ace Bollywood stars including multi-talented Akshay Kumar, gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, yesteryears’ dancing diva Helen and cricketer MS Dhoni are among 133 personalities named for this year’s ‘Padma’ awards.
A total 133 people, representing different walks of life, are likely to be awarded the ‘Padma’ Awards for the year 2009.
While 40 people out of these are likely to get the ‘Padma Vibhushan’ (10) and ‘Padma Bhushan’ (30), another 93 are tipped to receive the ‘Padma Shri’.
Music maestro Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, ghazal singer Penaz Masani, playback singer Udit Narayan, environmentalist Mr. Sunderlal Bahuguna, Olympic Gold medal winner Abhinav Bindra, crikceter MS Dhoni also figure in this year’s list.
The chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Mr. Anil Kakodkar, environmentalist Mr. Sunderlal Bahuguna, ISRO chief Dr. G Madhavan Nair, the man behind Chandrayaan’s success, Sister Nirmala of the Missionaries of Charities and the 82-year-old Bahuguna Pitroda are among the ten personalities to get ‘Padma Vibhushan’, India's second highest civilian honor.
Promising shooter Abhinav Bindra and Knowledge Commission chairman Mr. Sam Pitroda will get the ‘Padma Bhushan’ list.
India cricket captain MS Dhoni, spinner Harbhajan Singh, singer Udit Narayan, actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Helen and Akshay Kumar, radio presenter-programmer Ameen Sayani, and world billiards champion Pankaj Advani will be honored with ‘Padma Shri’.
After winning the Miss World crown in 1994, Aishwarya started her career with Mani Ratnam’s ‘Iruvar’ and delivered megahits such as "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", "Devdas", "Taal" and "Guru". She also worked with Hollywood directors for films including "Bride and Prejudice", "The Last Legion", "Mistress of Spices" "Provoked" and soon to be released "Pink Panther-2".
One of the top faces of Indian cinema at the global level, Akshay Kumar has hits like “Namastey London”, "Welcome", "Singh is Kinng", "Khiladi", "Mohra", "Main Khiladi Tu Anari", "Dhadkan", "Dil To Paagal Hai", "Aitraaz", "Hera Pheri", "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi" and "Garam Masala".
Helen, often referred as India's 'cabaret queen' for her sumptuous twists, was seen in recent films like "Mohabattein" and "Marigold".
Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, 71, the younger brother of singing legend Lata Magheshkar, is known for composing touching tunes in Marathi flicks including "Sansar", "Jait Re Jait", "Umbartha" and "Nivdung".
