Amy's Kitchen recalls over 74,000 meals
Amy's Kitchen, manufacturer of organic and non-GMO convenience and frozen foods, has recalled over 74,000 meals on account of a potentially deadly bacteria. The decision was taken by the manufacturer when it was warned by one of spinach suppliers that Listeria has been found in their products.
According to the spinach supplier, Listeria can lead to serious and even fatal infections in young children, weak or elderly people. And those who have weak immune systems could also get affected by the bacteria.
The products which are reported to be affected by the bacteria include the Spinach Pizza, the Vegetable Lasagna, the Enchilada Verde Whole Meal and the Tofu Scramble. According to a statement by the company, healthy individuals will not be affected much and could suffer only short-term symptoms like severe headache, high fever, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Pregnant woman can suffer miscarriages and stillbirths, if they get infected with the bacteria. According to Amy's Kitchen, they have not received any illness complaints linked to the potentially contaminated products.
However, they took the step of recalling the products. The Food and Drug Administration is aware of the recall made by the company. The company said in a statement to ABC News, "This recall is based on a recall notice from one of Amy's organic spinach suppliers that Amy's may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes".
It also said that the US Food and Drug Administration didn't say that the recall should be made; the step was taken by the company considering health of people. Those who purchased the products, which have been recalled now, are told to return them to the service desk and their cost will be refunded.
