Alta Bates Summit Medical Center faces $71,000 fine

Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is facing $71,000 fine because of a violation of safety procedures. According to UPI report, the hospital was unsuccessful in placing 23 suspected tuberculosis patients in working isolated treatment rooms causing exposure to the risk of possible infection to other Alta Bates patients, visitors and staff.

During the safety inspection, it was also found that the facility was also unsuccessful in providing an adequate number of Powered Air Purifying Respirators that is a violation to the new regulations adopted in November. The new regulations were set up with an aim to take care of patients believed to have Ebola. The violation was exposed in 2012 and recently people came to know about it because state officials were investigating another violation that happened in 2009.

"It is important that all hospitals take up full responsibility of equipping themselves with functional isolation rooms so as to protect the public from epidemics that are easily spread", said CNA co-president Zenei Cortez while highlighting that there had been an Ebola crisis in the recent months that is still on the rise.

Sutter Health is defending the California Nurses Association accounts of accusations. According to Sutter Health, the review of data of the hospital shows that no patient or staff was ever put at risk. Alta Bates will have to pay the fine and also to document its efforts in making sure that precautions are being taken and changes to correct the violations.

Presently, the hospital is not settling the penalty and it is expected that the hospital will put efforts to make things better. At present, the hospital is developing an enhanced exposure control plan. It is purchasing accurate number of respirators and whipping up an airborne infection isolation ward.
